Whew! You know, it's been a week without the TV, without the DVD, without digital cable with OnDemand. It's both good and bad. Good, because, well, we're being unusually productive over here. Bad, because, well, we're producing a lot of unholy messes that are problems to clean up, and because Sunny never, never, never stops talking or singing or something and my ears are permanently damaged. Or bleeding.
Anyway, we had a birthday party for Sunny on Saturday, the actual day when she turned 4. It's such a cliche, I know, but it's amazing how fast time has passed. Just yesterday I had one little girl who was about 2, and now I have 2 girls and 2 boys and one of them just had a birthday. Just an awsome thing, this life and time thing. Here's what it was like when she joined us here.
In a rare treat, here are some pics from the party (thanks, Uncle Orca/Agincourtdb). Note I won't tell you which kids are actually mine, though some are obvious:
The tutu that the birthday girl has on in that picture above I made with my own two hands, with a little help from Trout. Sunny loved it, and the dance she did was priceless. I'll have to see if I can find a way to post the video on here.
Saturday night my inlaws came to watch the kids for a couple of hours so BigDaddyFish and I could go out and have a little peace and quiet after the party. We went looking for a new couch, but apparently he wants a couch that is as uncomfortable as humanly possible, so our search will be long and probably fruitless. Anyway, we then stayed up until 5AM drinking wine and doing, as my SIL once put so elegantly, "what grownups do at that time of night." We woke up at 8 am Sunday both hungover and remembering EXACTLY why we don't do that kind of stuff anymore. Stay up all night drinking more than we should, that is. All other activities have been and will continue to be part of our repertoire. Because we are gluttons for punishment, if nothing else, we then took the kids out to IHOP where I proceeded to have the worst meal there I ever have and attempted not to hurl it back up, then we went down to the Roosevelt Memorial in the chilly wind and walked around trying to enjoy the monument while the kids all whined about wanting to go home, being hungry, wanting stuff from the gift shop, etc. And a good time was had by all.
In the past three days, I have cooked dinner for my family twice and both times we have eaten it at the table. Together. As a family. Both times we were reminded why we don't do that much, either. Our children are wild animals and Sunny WILL. NOT. STOP. TALKING. EVER. BDF has been unbelievably frustrated at his inability to get a word in edgewise and taken to raising his hand. Nemo thinks this is the funniest thing ever and periodically will throw his hand up in the air and yell something that sounds suspiciously like "Touchdown!" if you don't pronounce any of the consonants.
Little Man got in kept in at recess for fighting at school. This is the umpteenth time. At this rate, he will be suspended sometime around Memorial Day. He's in KINDERGARTEN. I hope he enjoys his NO SCREEN TIME EVER punishment. Yesterday was the first day it was in effect and he asked me to play DS no fewer than thirteen times. Anyone have any ideas how to nip this one in the bud right now? Because I may not let him live to be 7 at this rate.
Everyone always told me that 4 is a wonderful age, and I remember it being so with both Trout and Little Man. Sunny, however, has been going through a sort of shrieking-screaming-kicking-tantrum stage for the last couple of months. When she goes into full shriek, she sounds just like Boo in Monsters, Inc. when Mike takes the bear away from her and she blows out all the lights in Monstropolis. It's awful. I am so ready for this 4 thing to kick in but so far? Notsomuch. Other than that and being the primary Mischief Maker, Esq. for this house, she is a delight, smart and cute and ready to entertain at a moment's notice. Whether you want her to or not.
Anyone have any spare ear plugs?
