Friday night I shed the trappings of Mommy for a few hours to spend some time being a grownup with other grownups, specifically the DC Metro Moms. It's all Jodi's fault, really; first she hooked me up with them and I started writing for them, and now she acts as upcounty social director: she pays attention to the listserv, which I don't half the time, then she says yes and sets things up and asks me, Polar Express style, "Well, you comin'?" and I just go. It's awesome.
All I had to do was get dressed in non-momywear, specifically bootcut jeans, my least-frumpy top, and my brand spanking new heeled black boots (I am not a girl - I now own six whole pairs of shoes, that's all), and I even wore...wait...jewelry! Dangly earrings and a necklace, even! And nobody was all grabby and I made it out of the house with them intact. Then I drove to Jodi's house and she drove me, Lindsay, and Stacy to the party in the Traverse she got to drive for the week. She thinks it's big, but I think it's small. I guess it just depends on your perspective, and mine's Minivan Perspective, so it's not big. Anyway, we had a minor blip when Jodi was paying better attention to the GPS thingamabobby than I apparently was, and I thought we had the wrong exit but we didn't but Jodi listened to me anyway (that'll teach her) and we ended up having to drive around in a circle. But eventually we got there.
And the fun! Good food, GREAT wine (of which I only had one glass), and the company of all the wonderful women of DC Metro Moms. Thanks, Stacy, for raiding the dessert tray with me and sharing so that we could try even more varieties than we could have alone.
I can't even begin to link to all the women I talked to there because I will surely forget someone and I don't want to do that because they were all fabulous, but I have to note that this is, in my experience, an extraordinary group of women. I tend to get very nervous before gatherings of lots of women, because in my experience women can be rather, shall we say, catty. I am not a "Big" name blogger, I have a teeny tiny blog, with a teeny tiny readership, and at previous blogging events I've been to before, I have felt a bit like the interloper, the intruder to The Big People who all know each other and read each other and get thousands of hits a day. But with DC Metro Moms, I have always felt welcome, even when nobody knew me. I have never met a single woman who wasn't immediately welcoming, and warm, and friendly, and inclusive. I am privileged to be a part of such an inspirational group.
It's amazing how good for the spirit it is to just go and hang out with the girlfriends, and let's face it, if it weren't for this blog and the people I've met through it, I wouldn't have any social life at all. And I'm a social person, unlike my husband who would happily live in a cave in the middle of nowhere for the rest of his life if he didn't have us. So thanks, Nicole, for all the hard work of planning the party, and everyone, for making me feel so warm inside. Go here to Nicole's site for awesome pictures of the party.
Is Polar Express style a good thing?
It was a blast!

Teeny tiny blogger? No way! After all, you were the one who got me to write for PnP after my first DCMM wine event where I felt like an interloper! And you looked awesome! So great to see you and can't wait for next time!
