My grandfather was known for his rather bizarre sense of humor. He had a quick wit, though sometimes it did take a while for his quips to sink in. His favorite medium was puns, the more groan inducing the better, and it just wasn't a family gathering if somebody wasn't saying "Oh, Granddaddy."
One of the cuter things he used to do was when he wrapped presents for my grandmother. He'd label one tag with their actual names, but the others would be famous couples, like Lucy and Ricky, or Antony and Cleopatra, or Lancelot and Gueneviere. Part of the fun of the person handing out the gifts on Christmas Eve, when we usually celebrated with that side of the family, was seeing who his alternate identities were.
This Christmas I'm missing my grandparents tremendously and trying to find ways to recapture some of the warmth of my own Christmases past. I've stolen Granddaddy's tradition, and I have addressed my gifts to Ricky from Lucy, to George from Martha, to Han from Leia, and my favorite, to Westley from Buttercup. I'm done for this year, but help me out for next year - who are your favorite famous couples, past or present?
And what are your family's most bizarre holiday traditions?
I'm thinking about you. I share the same bittersweet feelings. I'm missing my dad and grandmother. Hugs to you and yours.
As for the couples: Adam and Eve, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella and Prince Charming, Mickey and Minnie, Donald and Daisy...tons of fun!
Merry Christmas!
